A Nanyang Business School alumnus donates $100,000 to the NTU bursary fund in aid of future generations of university students.
Mr Daniel Chew, a graduate of Nanyang Business School (NBS), donated a cool $100,000 to NTU’s endowment bursary fund in honour of his parents. Mr Chew, 37, graduated from NBS with a Bachelor of Accountancy degree with first-class honours.
“Having benefited from bursaries myself during my school years, I know at firsthand how important such help is for those who do not have the financial means to pursue their educational dreams,’’ says the father of three children aged 10, seven and three.
He says he gave away some of his hard earned money to invest in the future of university students who are motivated to excel in life, but need financial aid to complete their tertiary education.Education empowers
"Education provides hope to break out from the poverty cycle, opens doors for a better future and enables one to contribute more significantly to our society. Thus, I find it gratifying to reach out to promising youths who need that helping hand to complete their university education and fulfil their dreams in life. This is one way of giving back to society," he points out.
Mr Chew is the only Asian in petrochemical giant Shell’s global tax leadership team. He is Regional Business Tax Manager, Upstream International Asia at Shell’s regional headquarters here in Singapore.
Mr Chew says he enjoys the challenges Shell provides; he leads the regional and global teams to deliver significant values to the business, learning and contributing at the same time.
He shares that his studies at NBS equipped him well for his working life as the scope of studies was wide which gave him exposures and awareness, as also the technical skills. Giving back
After graduating from NTU, Mr Chew started his career by joining Arthur Andersen as a tax consultant. He led a busy life, averaging 60 to 80 hours every week and sometimes even exceeding 100 hours a week.
Yet he found time to pay back to society by serving the less privileged. With support from his employer, Mr Chew started a mentoring programme for under privileged children since 1996. Today, he continues to manage the ongoing mentoring programme.
After Arthur Andersen, he worked with Caltex, Johnson & Johnson and Avago Technologies, and then joined Shell Petroleum in 2008. He hopes to continue to progress his career with Shell.
