Congratulations to the Class of 2018!
The inaugural MBBS Class of 2018 completed their Year 5 finals mid-January and all 52 students passed. The exam comprised a 12-station OSCE and a 210-item Single Best Answer (SBA) paper. A new category was introduced in the OSCE which consisted of two 20-minute stations that mirrored the clinical work expected of junior doctors. For the SBA paper, items from the UK Medical Schools Council Assessment Alliance bank and Imperial were included to allow benchmarking of the exam. All students passed their OSCE and SBA exams and started their Student Assistantship Programme in Medicine, Surgery / Orthopaedic Surgery and Family Medicine on 5 February.

LKCMedicine focuses on strengthening international ties

2018 started with a slew of follow-up visits from universities and institutes from around the world to continue building on the strong foundations set during earlier exchanges. Delegations from Brunel University London, Siriraj Medical School and RIKEN Centre for Life Sciences returned to LKCMedicine to learn more about its innovative pedagogy and explore deeper research and student exchange ties.

In January, the School also welcomed a duo of visiting academics from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH). During their visit, they had several discussions with the School's senior management and faculty and toured the School's facilities at EMB and CSB as well as the facilities at SCELSE. The two also delivered two lectures on tuberculosis as part of the LKCMedicine-Singapore Infectious Diseases Initiative Guest Lecture Series.


LKCMedicine's 2018 outreach off to strong start

The LKCMedicine outreach team hit the ground running in January, representing the School at pre-university events and career fairs. Kicking off the year, was a visit to Saint Andrew's Junior College for its annual Local University Forum, where the LKCMedicine team engaged more than 100 students on 17 January. Just two days later, LKCMedicine hosted 108 students and teachers from the Victoria-Cedar Alliance Integrated Programme (VCA IP) at its Experimental Medicine Building. The VCA IP is made up of three schools, Victoria School, Cedar Girls' Secondary School and Victoria Junior College, and their visit to NTU was part of an orientation programme to introduce them to the broad range of tertiary and career opportunities.

On 23 January, LKCMedicine hosted 30 participants of the 10th International Science Youth Forum (ISYF) at the Novena campus. The participants, who were pre-university students from Singapore, the US, China, Taiwan, Mexico and Korea, took part in a Team-Based Learning (TBL) class and got first-hand experience of the School's innovative and technology-enhanced approach to teaching. While on 26 January, the LKCMedicine outreach team participated in Anglo-Chinese Junior College's (ACJC) annual Career & Higher Education Fair, which was attended by more than 700 JC2 students and their parents.


Inaugural Digital Health Workshop sheds light on mobile health apps
On 22 and 23 January, LKCMedicine's Centre for Population Health Sciences (CePHaS) organised its inaugural Digital Health Workshop held at the Clinical Sciences Building. Attended by over 40 participants, the workshop addressed research gaps in the use of mobile health apps, so that these apps' potential could be fulfilled and they could gain mainstream adoption in health systems in a range of functions. Over the two days, invited international and local guest speakers shared their expertise in different areas such as digital health, innovation, regulation, education and mobile applications for health. The workshop covered three themes: perspectives from clinicians and patients, opportunities and challenges, and adopting the use of health apps.


​LKCMedicine PhD by Research programme welcomes its fifth cohort
On 12 January, LKCMedicine welcomed its fifth cohort of PhD by Research. This year, the School inducted nine PhD students, bringing the total number of PhD students enrolled to 42.
