Steve Jobs once said: "You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future."
For Eco Travel Services' Managing Director Ms Cindy Chng Jit Huee, those words seem to strike a chord.
According to the 23-year-old, attending an environmental forum when she was just a junior college student made a huge impact on her life. She had the good fortune to meet Mr Wilson Ang, President of Environmental Challenge Organization Singapore, a non-profit body that provides business space and advice to youths keen to take up sustainable green causes. This inspired her to start Eco Travel Services (ETS), a travel agency that specializes in organizing eco tours.
Registered as a company in April 2009, ETS's revenues hit $500,000 by the following year – an impressive feat for an SME with a start-up fund of $10,000 injected by Ms Chng and her mother.
It was also quite an achievement, given that Ms Chng – a full-time business student at Nanyang Technological University – had to juggle her studies with running the company. Securing $50,000 of funding from SPRING Singapore under the Young Entrepreneurs Scheme for Start-ups in 2009 was an extra feather in her cap.
