Curriculum development gears up for Phase 2

Over the last three years, I have been to Singapore many times and met some of the most dedicated, passionate and professional educators working at LKCMedicine. But even by their high standards, the Novena Campus must be entering a new phase of energy and excitement with 78 Year 1 students joining the 54 pioneers who have entered their second year. 

The journey to this point has been one of the highlights of my career and I am privileged to be taking on the role of Curriculum Development Lead. I must give thanks to Dr Georgina Morris who worked tirelessly on this project and has now moved on to a new phase of her clinical career. I would also like to introduce Dr Anna Romito, who has been appointed Deputy Curriculum Development Lead. She holds a Master’s degree in education and specialises in medical ethics, working with Imperial’s Honorary Senior Lecturer in Endocrinology & Ethics Dr Kong Wing May.

An increasingly important function of medical schools is education research and scholarship. Vice-Dean for Education Associate Professor Naomi Low-Beer, Senior Curriculum Development Fellow Dr Senita Mountjoy and I conducted a workshop at this year’s conference of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) in Milan. The conference was a great success and our workshop, titled How to introduce Team-Based Learning (TBL) into a lecture-based course was very well received. It was clear that many medical schools are looking for effective methods to create a flipped classroom and were interested to hear of our experiences at LKCMedicine.

As the Year 1 and 2 students immerse themselves in the integrated mobile learning system and novel TBL sessions, the focus of the London Office and the LKCMedicine team in Singapore is shifting to Phase 2 of the curriculum. Phase 2 will be no less innovative, with further emphasis on mobile learning, effective use of technology in education and inspirational teachers who will guide our students to be the clinicians, scientists and medical leaders of the future.
