On 2 November, right in the midst of A level exams, a record-setting 1,225 students sat for an additional two-hour pen-and-paper aptitude test with an eye to applying to LKCMedicine in 2017.
The number of students sitting this year’s BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) is a 26 per cent increase on last year’s number. Last year, about 970 students sat the BMAT and of those, more than 800 went on to apply for a place in LKCMedicine’s fourth cohort of 108 students, who were admitted in August 2016.
The record number comes off the back of an intensive outreach campaign, which saw faculty, staff and students engaging with prospective students, their parents and teachers. Outreach efforts kicked off in March, when LKCMedicine held an Open House, and continued thereafter with the School hosting junior college, polytechnic and secondary school students at its Novena campus for two admissions and career talks. During the same week, the School also gave tailored admissions briefings to several JCs and secondary schools, such as Raffles Institution, Victoria Junior College and Hwa Chong Institution, engaging with hundreds prospective medical students from 26 educational institutions.
This was followed by engagement sessions for teachers, counsellors and parents of prospective students, which offered them an opportunity to learn more about the innovative curriculum, student life and admission requirements. In addition to the talks, parents had the chance to tour the School’s brand new facilities at the Experimental Medicine Building and participate in hands-on sessions giving them a glimpse into the life of a medical student at the School.
In August 2017, LKCMedicine will induct its fifth cohort, which marks a milestone for the School; the School will be teaching students across all five years for the first time. Students of the inaugural cohort, admitted in 2013, will embark on their final year of the MBBS programme, before graduating in 2018.
Students who completed the BMAT and their school-leaving exams can apply online to LKCMedicine via the NTU admissions portal.
