23 October 2013 marked another milestone for LKCMedicine as the School’s new education wing was officially opened by Minister for Education Mr Heng Swee Keat.
The wing is named after Singapore businessman and philanthropist, the late Mr Toh Kian Chui, in recognition of a S$20 million gift from the Toh Kian Chui Foundation.
Together with the Singapore Government Matching received, a S$50 million endowment has been established at LKCMedicine to support a Distinguished Professorship, scholarships, a gold medal for the top student of each graduating cohort, and medical education and research.
Gracing the event was the daughter of Mr Toh and Chairman of the Toh Kian Chui Foundation Miss Toh Keng Choo and members of her family; LKCMedicine’s Governing Board Chairman Mr Lim Chuan Poh; Nanyang Technological University (NTU) President Professor Bertil Andersson; and NTU Provost Professor Freddy Boey.
Following the opening ceremony, Minister Heng and guests were given a demonstration of LKCMedicine's Team-Based Learning pedagogy as well as a tour of the Novena campus.
The opening of the Toh Kian Chui Annex marks the completion of the first phase of the School’s infrastructural development at NTU’s Novena campus. Located next to the 1920s heritage building housing the School’s headquarters, the Annex has a distinctive glass façade that reflects the former’s historic features and pre-war architecture. It houses a variety of teaching and learning facilities, including a 188-seat lecture theatre, a 66-seat seminar room, an interim library, and boardroom.
