Hwa Chong Institution team wins inaugural Anatomy Challenge

​LKCMedicine's first ever inter-school medical competition, the Anatomy Challenge, was held on 15 April. Receiving an overwhelming response from Singapore students, the event saw over 150 students from 20 junior colleges and polytechnics participate, with two teams from Hwa Chong Institution bagging the top two prizes, and the River Valley High School team claiming third.
On winning the top prize, team leader Cheong Jia Sheng said, “We are grateful to our seniors for their guidance and to LKCMedicine students for this opportunity to learn more about medical anatomy. Through this competition, we are even more inspired to become doctors and contribute back to society in future.”
Organised by students from LKCMedicine, the inaugural Anatomy Challenge saw participants learn about the various aspects of human anatomy, from its history to the latest imaging technologies, and how these are applied in modern clinical practice.

LKCMedicine Dean Professor James Best said the event aims to inspire aspiring doctors by providing them real insights into anatomy and a chance to experience the school’s modern teaching approaches.
He said, “At LKCMedicine, we have developed an innovative curriculum that brings clinical relevance and patient contact right at the start of our medical teaching, including the structure of the human body.
Anatomy is now taught as functional anatomy that gives students a strong foundation on which to build their chosen career, because a working knowledge of anatomy is relevant to every branch of medicine. So having gone through the experience of learning anatomy LKCMedicine style, our students came up with the idea and planned this event in its entirety. It is one of only three medical-themed quizzes in the region for students and is designed as an enjoyable learning experience.”
Apart from the competition, students got to observe demonstrations of the high-tech medical teaching equipment used at the School, including the Anatomage Table which allows for virtual dissections. They had the opportunity to inspect plastinated specimens and gain an understanding of the use of clinical imaging technologies in anatomy teaching. The students also received exclusive career advice from LKCMedicine professors, doctors and clinicians from Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

LKCMedicine Year 3 student and chair of the organising committee Aric Lee said, “Through these activities, we hope our pre-university juniors will be inspired by the inner intricacies of the human body, and leave with a thirst to know more.”
Gracing the event as the Guest-of-Honour was Emeritus Consultant Clinical Professor Low Cheng Hock from Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s Department of General Surgery, also sponsored the Challenge Trophy and Shield.
On awarding the top winners the Low Cheng Hock Challenge Trophy and Shield, he said, “I’m delighted to see the student-organisers’ enthusiasm and passion for learning and showcasing anatomy knowledge – also reflected in the overwhelming response for participation by Singapore’s pre-university students. It is my hope that the participants will be inspired to continue pursuing knowledge in anatomy. And that we as educators continue to explore innovative ways to teach it.”

After completing an individual challenge testing the depth of their knowledge of thorax, the five teams whose players accumulated highest cumulative score advanced to the second round. The five team pitted their knowledge against each other over five rounds, including Jeopardy, Picture Perfect and Judge’s Special round.
Teams were assessed by a three-member judging panel, which included LKCMedicine Visiting Professor and Warwick School of Medicine Professor of Clinical Anatomy Peter Abrahams, who is a world-authority in anatomy, and author of clinical anatomy textbooks used in medical schools the world over.
The other judges were LKCMedicine Senior Lecturer and Lead for Anatomy Dr Sreenivasulu Reddy Mogali and LKCMedicine Assistant Professor and Tan Tock Seng Hospital Department of Diagnostic Radiology Senior Consultant Gerald Tan.
