In a short span of two months, our students have completed their first teaching block – Introduction to Medical Sciences – which consisted of Team-Based Learning (TBL) sessions and laboratory practicals, Integrated Clinical Practice hands-on sessions, and the hospital and polyclinic weeks at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Bukit Batok Polyclinic.
This flying start is just the beginning of what promises to be an action packed first year at LKCMedicine. In October, as they start their Cardiorespiratory teaching block, they will be introduced to the Clinical Encounter and Long Term Patient Project (LTPP) courses. To complement the TBL sessions in the Human Structure and Function course, they will be introduced to a real or simulated clinical scenario in real time during their Clinical Encounter sessions. These sessions are designed to enhance the students’ interest in learning medical sciences related to clinical medicine. Through patient visits during the LTPP course, they will spend time with patients to have a better understanding of their healthcare needs and what it is like for a person to live with a chronic illness or disability.
The Medical Humanities and Medical Language courses will also run throughout the Renal and Endocrine, and Musculoskeletal and Skin teaching blocks in Year 1. The Medical Humanities course will allow students to explore the inter-relationship between medicine and humanities in the form of literature, art, film and media and clinical skills, while the Medical Language course will help them gain a better understanding about cultural differences and issues that may affect doctor-patient communication, and how to recognise when linguistic assistance is required.
It has certainly been an exciting journey for the team to put in place the process and logistics of delivering our curriculum and I hope our students will find these courses meaningful and beneficial in their preparation to become our doctors of tomorrow.
