Managing transitions through close collaboration

During our most recent visit to LKCMedicine last month, senior members of the London curriculum team and Deputy Director of Education Management Paul Ratcliffe were once again impressed by the rapid development and evolution of LKCMedicine. We met with many of the expert clinicians and faculty who are leading the curriculum in Singapore.

Deputy Curriculum Development Lead Dr Jaita Mukherjee and I attended the hospital and polyclinic weeks at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Choa Chu Kang Polyclinic. We were amazed at the level of maturity and professionalism displayed by the new cohort of Year 1 students and the dedication and energy of the many clinical teams who were supporting their learning. It is clear that the standard of students at LKCMedicine is very high and Singapore will greatly benefit from training such a highly motivated and skilled group of medical students.

The team also met with clinical leads of the Year 4 postings and leads for PELLS (Professionalism, Ethics, Law, Leadership and Patient Safety), Pathology, Pharmacology and Clinical Communication. The curriculum has been designed in an integrated manner under the expert leadership of Assistant Dean for Family Medicine and Head of Year 4 Associate Professor Wong Teck Yee. This innovative programme will facilitate optimal transition of students from the general medical and surgical specialities in Year 3 to the related but at times esoteric worlds of Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Psychiatry. In addition, students will be immersed in general specialities such as Emergency Medicine, Geriatrics and Family Medicine along with subspecialist disciplines such as Critical Care, Rehabilitation Medicine and Palliative Care. The Year 4 curriculum has been carefully designed to support student learning throughout these interrelated areas of clinical medicine and will provide excellent preparation for the final year of training before qualification as junior doctors.
