Making of the Anatomy Challenge

What started out as a passing thought is actually materialising! Last year, after an inspiring neuroanatomy practical tutorial by Dr Jeeve Kanagalingam (ENT Surgeon and Wu Lien-Teh Senior House Tutor), some of us in the Class of 2019 remarked how there ought to be a competition that pits people’s anatomy ‘skills’ against one another, much like the Physiology Quiz organised by the University of Malaya.

Knowing my interest in the subject, LKCMedSoc then-President Goh Kang Shiong later prompted me to turn the idea into reality. This marked the start of our soon-to-be year-long journey of planning for the Anatomy Challenge. The event will take place on 15 April 2017 and students from local Junior Colleges and Polytechnics are invited.

Our Organising Committee consists of a tremendous team of 13 students from Years 1 to 3; they are creative, inspired, and determined to make this inaugural event a success. The Anatomy Challenge comprises two competitive rounds - an Individual Challenge and a Team Challenge in the form of gameshow-style finals.

Professor Peter Abrahams, LKCMedicine Visiting Professor and Emeritus Professor of Clinical Anatomy at the University of Warwick, will deliver a Keynote Address questioning the work of Leonardo Da Vinci, entitled, “A 15th century anatomist whose artistic concepts anticipated 21st century radiology?” We will also have carnival booths, run by student volunteers and helmed by LKCMedicine faculty. This event will be graced by Clinical Professor Low Cheng Hock, the senior general surgeon who has mentored many Year 3s and 4s at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Through these activities, we hope our pre-university juniors will be inspired by the inner intricacies of the human body, and leave with a thirst to know more! For those of us - whether organisers, volunteers, or faculty - from LKCMedicine, we want the Anatomy Challenge to be a platform where our ideas about anatomy - applied to both academic and clinical contexts - can be proudly displayed. We anticipate the event to be a delightful day of sharing and learning for all.

We are deeply grateful to Dr Sreenivasulu Reddy, LKCMedicine Lead for Anatomy, for his patient guidance and expertise, as well as many other senior faculty and staff who have been working hard to plan the event alongside us. For now, it’s all systems go, as we inch towards the event with great anticipation. We are so privileged to be raising the status and buzz around anatomy in Singapore, starting from within our LKCMedicine community, and we are excited to see how the Anatomy Challenge will mature with each coming edition.
