NTU IGS’ Class of 2017 celebrates
The second batch of IGS postgraduate students celebrate their Convocation over great food and company

Over 60 postgraduates from the second batch of Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies (IGS) programme received their doctorates at the Convocation held on 31 July.

The graduates celebrated the occasion over delectable food such as wings and beer with family and friends at a tea party held at NTU bistro Pen and Inc. Guests brought home polaroid shots of the beautiful moments as souvenirs.

IGS Dean Professor Bo Gunnar Liedberg congratulated the graduates and thanked their loved ones for their support. He said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents here for supporting your children in adopting the science in NTU. As PhD students are crucial for the evolution of science, they will make a difference in mankind.”

Guest-of-Honour Professor Yue Chee Yoon, Associate Provost (Graduate Education) also addressed the largest IGS cohort thus far. He reflected on the growth of IGS since the programme began five years ago. “Nowadays you may ask, why we don’t see the word interdisciplinary in research journals so often? It is already a known fact that interdisciplinary research is fundamental. Hence, it is no longer necessary to emphasise that anymore,” explained Prof Yue.

IGS graduate Dr Sudhanshu Shukla from the Energy Research Institute @ NTU also shared Prof Yue’s views. He hopes to put his interdisciplinary knowledge to good use in his home. He added: “Society has many problems that can be solved by scientific innovation. My plan is to approach these problems from different perspectives. I want to help people on the ground by making students aware of energy and climate change scenarios and providing affordable energy solutions to the small towns.”
